The way that the planets are aspected, the houses that the planets and signs are in, and the consciousness of the individual will all contribute greatly to the way the energy will be expressed.
And remember, awareness and freedom are inextricably connected.
Characteristics of the Aries energy
Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, and is correlated with the time of the year called “spring” in the northern hemisphere. Specifcally, the sun is in the constellation of Aries, the first zodiac sign (“Aries season”), from March 21- April 19.
Aries is a cardinal fire sign. Here’s what that means:
Cardinal sign: This is an initiating energy. It gives a big boost that is meant to get something started. (Read more about the modalities in astrology HERE)
Fire element: This is an energy that is associated with the will, and the spirit of the person. It is very impassioned and moves in flow with the heart.
Mars: The ruling planet, or “despositor” for the constellation Aries is Mars.
The Ram Constellation
All of the astrological signs have a symbol that go along with them. For Aries, the astrological symbol is the ram or the bull.

The Ram constellation is known for being head strong (it quite literally uses it’s horns to battle), and for it’s proneness to anger.

Aries energy is outward directed and action oriented.
The Mythology of Aries
In Greek mythology, Ares was known as the god of war and was one of the olympian dieties. He was known to be son to both Zeus and Hara, and some texts point to him being the husband to Aphrodite (whom in astrology is associated with Venus).
Aries people can be BOSSY
The Aries man and Aries woman can easily get a rap for being bossy. These people are natural-born leaders, who tend to be the most confident of the zodiac sign.
This confidence is not necessarily in themselves, per se, rather it’s built into the Aries archetype because the objective of this energy is to establish a vision, and then take the necessary instinctual action to bring that vision down into the material plane.
Aries people are known to be the most confident zodiac signs with great leadership skills because they are very action oriented and have a clear vision.
This results in a type of bossiness that says “I know the way, let’s go.”, and because the vision is so clear to them, they expect the others to follow.
Aries people can be DAREDEVILS
Aries energy is sometimes known for being daredevil- like, which make sense since it is an energy connected to the will.
These audacious rams are very connected to their instincts.
If you think of a newborn baby, fresh in the world, all that they have are their instincts. Upon entering the world, they instinctually do the breast climb, following after their mother’s voice and looking for their first outside-the-womb nourishment. They begin to interact with new things and have new experiences, and respond to those stimuli based entirely off of their body’s instincts.
This is why infants will crawl around exploring and putting things into their mouths, getting into things that could potentially harm them.
The problem here is having such a strong connection to the body and it’s impulses, without the awareness that can direct and master this energy, is it sometimes results in a lack of “thinking things through”.
This strong connection to the body and it’s impulses often results in a high sex drive as well.
Aries people can have a SHORT TEMPER
People with a lot of Aries energy are known for having a bad temper or a short fuse. The anger associated with the Aries archetype arises when the energy is stopped or limited.
There is a big “burst” of initiation energy that comes with this first sign in the zodiac, and that burst is intended to support the initiation of something. When something gets in the way of the action that is needed to propel the vision, anger erupts.
This anger acts as both an outlet for the stopped energy, and as a means for re-opening the path that has interrupted the intended progression.

Aries people can be LONE WOLVES
Aries is an independent energy, and as such these are people that tend to be independent creatures. The Aries energy has to do with learning about one’s self through instinctual action, so that becomes the method through which they progress.
Even at work and in professional relationships, these are people that feel the impulse from the inside, and then take action (rinse and repeat), so they tend to do better owning their own business.
The Aries archetype in the first house makes a square to the 4th house of family, where Cancer is the ruling archetype.
This square means that there is a tension between the energies.
This tension arises because the 4th house is about family, the tribe and the identity that forms from the roots of family, where as Aries is about the self- the individual apart from the group.
This shows us that in order to understand who we are as individuals, we must venture out, connecting to our own instincts and our own reason for being.
Aries people can be SELF-FOCUSED
People with Aries rising or strong Arian energy in their chart tend to be radical self-lovers who are naturally self- focused. As the first sign of the zodiac that is very body-connected and will driven, this is not an energy that is attuned to the emotions of others.
In the natural zodiac, Aries makes a trine to the archetype of Leo, which means that there is an easy flow of energy between the 2 archetypes. The Leo energy is about self-actualizing and understanding one’s unique gifts.
This connection between Aries and Leo is one of the important reasons why one of the Aries characteristics is being self-focused.
Aries people can be IMPULSIVE
In readings, I often explain the Aries energy as an explorer arriving on an island for the very first time.
They have a large knife in their hand and they cut the tall grass in front of them as they walk forward.
Their senses are all at the maximum alertness. The slightest movement in the grass or the trees above them causes their ears to perk up and their eyes to dart to the source of the movement.
Their body jumps without forethought when a snake crosses their path.
For this reason, the Aries energy is very connected to immediate and decisive action, without having a pre-made plan of action.
They approach new endeavours in this same mode, without reflection on the consequences of their actions, but rather a connection to their body where they figure it out as they go, trusting their bodies and instincts to both guide them and alert them to danger.
The impulsivity of this energy does not make space to consider ahead of time the possible consequences, it is “in the moment” and has to do with the beginning of something (hence why it rules the 1st house of the natural zodiac), and so the ability to complete tasks often becomes an issue.
Because of this visceral and inherent connection with the body, having a lot of Aries energy (especially in the 4th house, which rules the stomach) can cause Aries natives to be impulsive eaters.
The Aries energy, in the natural zodiac, makes a sextile to the 11th house, which is ruled by the constellation Aquarius.
This sextile between the 2 energies explains to us the impulsivity that the Aries energy faces. The Aquarius energy is not a linear one. It grows in spurts and moves by inspiration, which flows contrary to the linear progression that we are comfortable with and expect.
For this reason, when the Aries person gets a “lightning flash” of inspiration (consider that the symbol for Aquarius literally looks like lightning bolts), they take action on that inspiration and just move forward, which, from the outside, is often perceived or interpreted as impulsivity. Aries people can be COMPETITIVE
Put someone with a lot of Aries energy in a competitive setting and you will see them light up. The aggressive Aries energy is known for having a serious competitive streak and a blind optimism in their ability to push forward and “do it harder” when it seems that things are not going their way.
This has to do with the natural opposition that Aries makes to the sign Libra. In Libra, we learn about others, and how to bring balance and harmony to our relationships in a way that both the self and the others will be cared for.
In the natural zodiac, Aries makes an opposition to the sign of Aries.
The competitive drive of the Aries individual occurs because the instinctual action (ARIES) that the individual makes flows to and affects the person they are interacting with (LIBRA). That other person then responds in whatever way, which then teaches the Aries person something about themselves.
So the opposition between Aries and Libra means that the other people in the Aries person’s life act as mirrors for the individual helping them to see and understand themselves better.

Aries people can have TROUBLE RESTING
Aries people are typically known for having a lot of energy and being able to keep working for a long time.
Can you remember the last time you were really inspired about a project, and got to work on it? That inspired place that allows you to work through the night and forget to eat…those are Aries vibes.
Often people who have Mars in their first house or Aries on their ascendant require physical activity, even more than others, because they have so much energy. These are people who need to use up all their energy during the day in order to be able to sleep at night.
Aries people can be EMOTIONALLY DETACHED
This energy has to do with the body and with the will, so it is no surprise that Aries energy tends to be emotionally detached. This would be the wrong person to go to for emotional support.
Even in romantic relationships, the Aries lover tends to respond to problems and difficult situations by asking “okay, what can we DO to fix this?” instead of asking “How do you feel about this situation?”.
This energy tends to be very cut and dry…if this is done, then it is done. Onto the next! For this reason, the aries zodiac sign tends to get a bad reputation for being the worst heartbreaker.
