Are you more of an extrovert, or do you prefer a small group or 1:1 conversation? Are you a hand speaker? Are you really imaginative, or do you tend to be very practical in your thinking? These are ALL things that your Mercury triad will indicate in your birth chart!
Mercury, in the birth chart tells you where your brain is especially quick and agile, where you will find your peers, and where you will have exceptional communication skills.
Of course, like most things, it gets a little more complicated (even aspects aside) if you really want to delve into your Mercury gifts. Here’s why:
Mercury tells you where your brain is quick moving and agile.
The connection to the planet Mercury in astrology is also the speed with which someone’s brain can move when endowed with the Mercurial energy.
In mythology, the planet Mercury is attached to the god Hermes, who is the messenger. He is known for being quick; flying here and there with great speed to deliver the messages of the gods.
Where Mercury is in your chart, you will have a natural penchant for understanding things quickly, and being able to make quick mental connections.
The downside to this is that having strong Mercury energy, especially in the 12th house or in aspect to the moon, creates a susceptibility to anxiety. Because Mercury is so quick moving and frenetic, this energy, when not properly directed, can lead to overthinking which results in things like anxiety or difficulty focusing.
Mercury tells you where you will find your peers.
In the natural zodiac, Mercury astrology is clustered in with the zodiac sign Gemini, which rules the third house.
In the first houses of the zodiac (houses 1-5) we are experiencing the building of our life and ego, and so naturally communication would be an important part of that.
In the first house we have our instinctual responses, in the second house our survival and comforts and in the third house our communication, and even more specifically how we mentally label and categorize the different elements of life.
This third house space is where we connect to those who are close to us (in age and consciousness), and it’s our “networking zone”.
For this reason, siblings are also included as part of the Mercury/ Gemini/ 3rd house archetype.
So, by understanding how this archetype plays out in your own chart, you can understand your relationship to your peers and your siblings.
For example, someone who has their south node in the third house would have a natural inclination and comfort in being with their peers and siblings. They would feel especially safe there and would likely have a tendency to want to go back to their siblings for emotional and life support.
In this situation, the person’s north node would be in their 9th house, and this suggests that that person’s soul is moving towards creating safety and reciprocal relationships with people who are of different (higher) consciousness than them (like teachers) and people who are outside of their typical social groupings. Connecting with people from different cultures and belief systems would be very supportive for their growth, as would studying (especially philosophical material) and seeking their own inner spiritual guidance.
Of course in the above example, there would be nuance to this depending on the sign that is ruling their 9th house (and the placement of the dispositor) and any aspects that are made to their north node).
Mercury tells you where you will be especially skilled in communication.
The opposition that the third house makes to the 9th house in the natural zodiac tells us about the function of the Mercury energy:
to assign labels, mental indexing, opinions and communicative functions (Gemini, Mercury, third house) to our beliefs about the world and our specific cosmology (Sagittarius, Jupiter, 9th house).
Imagine the first time a knife was created. Did the person that built it know that what they were building was called a “knife”? No, they didn’t, because that word did not yet exist. That word was created as a means to express and communicate to others what it was. The understanding of the name of the tool eventually carried inherent understanding about what that tool was used for.
The Gemini energy works similar to that.
The reason that we need labels and words, which are part of the third house archetype, is so that we can effectively and meaningfully interact with people and with the world around us, and even with ourselves. (You can take a breath of relief here, knowing that you most certainly are not the only one who talks to yourself!)
So, wherever Mercury is in your chart will tell you about your natural style of communication, and the way that your brain tends to make connections and express your beliefs, values and opinions about life.
It is also important to note that the process of communication is not just about socializing, it is also about security. There is a type of inner security that is established when we are able to communicate our wants, likes, needs and values.
Have you ever tried to communicate with a learning-to-speak toddler who is frustrated at not being understood that they want “XYZ! (WHY is this so hard to understand??!)”. This is a very tangible and common example of the security that the third house archetype brings us.
It makes sense when you consider that Gemini precedes Cancer (the house of emotional security) and follows Taurus (the house of values).
If you’re just learning astrology, this is one of my favourite astrology glossary books, which delves deeper into this and all the other archetypes.
Conclusion
Little old Mercury, quick moving personal planet actually has a LOT of benefits, and is an important part of how we engage with the world.
In my own life, I have a son who has Saturn in his third house and for this reason he has always had trouble with communicating, especially with adults.
During my pregnancy with him, I was in school studying to work in healthcare and, unfortunately, felt like I needed to hide my pregnancy in order to make sure that I could sustain employment after I graduated. (People are sometimes very reluctant to hire pregnant women…which is a whole ‘nother convo for a whole ‘nother day…)
Because I studied and am trained in Recall Healing and epigenetics, I know that this is one of the ways my pregnancy environment has impacted his incarnation. You can get in touch with me at info@ThatZoiLife.com if you’d like to look into your or your child’s energetic genealogical situation, or look more into your own Mercury situation, especially if its retrograde natally.
As someone myself who has the Gemini archetype in my 12th house, I have always felt a strong pull towards words and the power that they hold, energetically, to build, create and sustain.
The word “logos”, referred to is most sacred texts refers to the word, and the power of the spoken word to bring forth life.
Wherever you are and whatever it is you are yearning for, I encourage you to take this moment to speak life into it.
…and I’ll do the same.
Still climbing,
XX,
-Celeste
