What’s your star sign? Well, that’s a loaded question actually and it extends far beyond one’s zodiac sun sign.
Read on to learn more about the emotional needs and personalities of natives who were born with the moon in the sign of the zodiac called Leo.

We often hear about the movement of the moon and the lunar cycles. The moon has a 28 day cycle, and during this cycle it follows it’s ecliptic (orbital path) passing through each of the 12 zodiac signs. The earth moon spends a little more than 2 days in each sign. Each year, we will all experience both a Leo full moon and a Leo new moon, which means that the moon is either conjunct (right next to) or directly opposing the sun in the sky. This is different from the moon placement in someone’s birth chart.
The placement of the moon in someone’s natal chart tells us exactly where the moon was at that person’s time of birth. That placement, along with the placement of all the other celestial bodies (and the aspects that they all make to each other) tell us about the energetic baseline of that individual for that lifetime, and how their soul is learning, growing and evolving in this incarnation.
First things first, the best way to find out your moon sign is by using moon sign calculators. Alternatively, you can get a natal chart (THIS is my favourite free site to get a natal chart done. You will need to know the exact time of your birth and birth location in order to pull up your chart), and then looking at it and finding the placement of the moon by looking for the moon glyph in your chart.

In astrology, someone’s “moon sign” is the position of the moon by sign (constellation) and house number (1-12) that the moon was in at the exact time of that person’s birth.
Where as the sun sign represents the person’s outer personality (how they shine into the world), the moon sign tells about how that person relates to their inner self, their inner personality and how they perceive themselves.
An individual’s moon sign is very important not only for romantic relationships and friendships, but it also tells a lot about that individual. Including:
1- The mother figure: The moon represents that individual’s early interaction with the mother archetype. So it tells a lot about how that individual was nurtured in their early life, and about the dynamic between that individual and their mother on an emotional level.
2- The way a person sees themselves: During the early years of life, especially during the first 6 months, we are learning to identify ourselves as being separate from our mothers (when we are born, we don’t understand ourselves to be separate from our mother. This distinction as separate beings happens slowly over the first 6 months of life). Slowly, we begin to perceive of ourselves as being our own people, and our understanding of ourselves is formed in a type of feedback loop that happens between the main caregiver and ourselves. This feedback loops helps us to understand who we are, and, as we move on through life, forms the basis of how we see ourselves. So when we look at our moon placement in our birth chart, it tells us how we see ourselves.
3- How a person finds inner security: Perhaps when you are upset you find that you go to music to cheer you up. Chances are that your mother sang to you or played music to you as a baby, and that imprint has left a subconscious bend towards music when you need to find emotional stability. The way that we were nurtured and soothed as infants creates the prototype for how we will go about seeking security in our lives as older children and then adults. In that way, our moon sign will tell us about how we were soothed and tended to as babies, and as a result, how we can find balance and inner harmony as adults. In a way, it’s a type of inbuilt secret formula.
So if you had an Aries moon, you might find balance in movement and physical activity.
If you have a Taurus moon, you might find balance in good food, warm blankets and sensuality.
If you have a Gemini moon, you might find balance in reading, or asking questions about the issue at hand.
If you have a Cancer moon, you might find balance in being at home or caring for loved ones.
If you have a Virgo moon, you might find balance in organizing your life and setting a plan in motion to get past the hurdle.
If you have a Libra moon, you might find balance in looking at art, or finding a way to smooth out the ruffles in a relationship.
If you have a Scorpio moon, you might find balance in asking deep psychological questions, or talk therapy.
If you have a Sagittarius moon, you might find balance in understanding the “why” behind a happening, or reading a sacred text.
If you have a Capricorn moon, you might find balance in good ol’ work.
If you have an Aquarius moon, you might find balance in connecting with a social group.
If you have a Pisces moon, you might find balance in solitude and reflection.
And if you have a LEO moon….
If you have a Leo moon, the moon was on the lunar sky path in the fifth sector of the zodiac – between Cancer and Virgo when you were born. The sign of Leo is a fire sign (meaning it has to do with the will).
Leo is a fixed sign, which means that the objective of this energy is to maintain it’s place and sustain a sense of stability. (You can read more about the fixed modality, and other modalities HERE) This makes sense when you consider that the overall objective of the Leo energy is to self actualize and achieve it’s purpose. A pursuit like this needs a steady, long term gaze and ability to commit to the goal.
Common personality traits of lunar lions (Leo moon) individuals
Leo Moon people are LOYAL

The Leo energy is one of the zodiac signs that are fixed, which means that the purpose of this energy is to sustain and maintain. This can sometimes come off as stubbornness, but a better way to look at it is that these are people who are loyal. This fire moon energy is loyal to their beliefs, to their perspectives, and especially to the people that they love. Leo moon people have a lot of love to give, and Leo love is fierce.
Leo moon people are FUN

Leo people are known for the vibrancy and love for being and feeling fully alive. In short, they know how to have a great time. In the natural zodiac, one of the ways the Leo archetype is represented is through the idea of children. The innocence, playfulness and spontaneity that children have naturally is expressed through the Leo energy. These are people that shine bright (which makes sense because the luminary this constellation is connected to is the sun), and have ready access to their inner child. They have a way about them that helps people to access their own inner child too, let down their guards and have a good time. Sometimes this free-spirited attachment to fun can show up as irresponsibility or a tendency to not consider the people who might be affected by their behaviour. This “irresponsibility” that Leo energy is often chided for is never mean spirited.
Leo moon people are NATURAL LEADERS

People who are born under the sign of the Leo moon (or even Leo sun sign) often consider themselves to be a born leader and will often find themselves in a leadership position. They see themselves as being someone with a special destiny to accomplish, and for that reason they have a fierce internal drive in their inner world to achieve whatever it is they feel called to. Their fervour for life and energy of optimism good things to have in a leader and are what contribute to their significant (and natural) leadership qualities.
Leo moon people have a need to be CENTRE STAGE

This tendency of the Leo zodiac sign to be the center of attention has to do with the deep need of this energy for external affirmation. They are not put off by big scenes or having all the attention on them. In fact, moments of spotlight fill their proverbial cups, and while a lot of people shy away from this, for the Leo moon person this is their comfort zone. Because the Leo sign is opposite the sign of Aquarius, this energy is “fuelled” by the support of the group, which happens through Aquarius. If we take a closer look, this feedback from the group has a substantial impact on the inner workings of the Leo energy, in that it “guides” the pursuits of the individual by affirming that yes, they are on the right track and doing well working towards their special purpose.
The downside of this facet of the lunar Leo is that there can be a type of dependency on, or a very strong need for the affirmation of others. The Leo man or woman can have a hard time, feeling deflated and unsure of themselves in the absence of praise and attention. One of the ways to work through this is to create an inner filter that establishes a ranking for the feedback that they receive, so that when they receive affirmative feedback, it can help them to propel forward. When feedback feels negative, they can still have the inner strength to move forward, knowing that not all feedback is equal or valid.
Leo moon people are CREATIVE

The constellation of Leo rules the 5th house of the natural zodiac, which has to do with creative self-expression, which include hobbies, pleasure, children, self expression and special purpose. If you imagine a diamond with light hitting it, the rainbow that emerges from the refracted light has several different colours. The Leo energy is like the specific colour of the rainbow that that individual is shining out into the world. Boldly. Proudly.
Leo moon people are PROUD

Like the lion in the jungle, the Leo energy has a natural understanding of it’s own power and value. Because they view themselves as being someone with a special purpose, they carry themselves and treat themselves accordingly. These are people that have a special love for luxury and for treating themselves. Primo coffee, cigars, brand name clothing are just a few of the things that moon leos are often known for.
Studying your moon sign is a great way to get an objective understanding of your emotional landscape, and to develop an understanding of how you can find balance and emotional wellness in your life. Studying the aspects that your moon makes to other planets will also help you to understand the areas of emotional wellness that you struggle in, and what kinds of steps you can take to alleviate those challenges.
The movement of the moon helps me to remember that there is a time for everything. I don’t need to rush, nor to be anxious. The natural movement of life will tend to everything, in its due time.
Still climbing,
I hope you are too.
