The rising sign in a birth chart is different from the sun sign (which is determined by birthdate), as it is determined by the exact time of birth of the individual. The rising sign in a birth chart has the function of showing the individual’s instinctual reaction to life, especially to new things, and their reflex way of being.
Just as we are unable to see what we look like without a mirror, in the same way we are unable to clearly see the way that our ascendant sign behaves with objectivity.
The rising sign, ascendant, or ASC is the energy that we are learning about, through instinctual action, which is then mirrored to us via the relationships that show up in our descendant.
(The descendant or DSC is directly opposing the first house and acts as a balance between self and others.)
[The Taurus sign (ruling the second house) has planet Venus (the planet of love) as it’s ruling planet, and Taurus is the second sign of the zodiac. Taurus season happens from April 20th- May 20th of each year.]
For the Taurus rising person, the understanding of personal needs and values is “rising” into their consciousness.
The individual with a Taurus ascendant is learning, through instinctual action, what their needs are, how to meet their needs, and what their most sacred values are in this lifetime
Through the crucible of relationship, the Taurus rising person will find themselves in situations where they feel as if their personal power is diminished, or their needs are not being tended to.
These encounters will create an internal information feedback loop where the individual is forced to go inwards and ask questions like “how am I depending on people and situations outside of myself to meet my needs?” and “what resources do I have, inherently, that I can use to meet my needs and live in alignment with my values?”.
Through this search, the Taurus rising person learns that, actually, the skills and resources that they need in order to be able to provide for themselves are inherent to them and cannot be taken away, even if they lose their belongings, jobs or relationships.
This creates a type of self empowerment where they are able to understand what it is that they need to live comfortably, and how they can procure those things for themselves in the world.
TAURUS RISING PERSONALITY TRAITS
Because Taurus is a fixed earth sign, Taurus rising individuals are often known for being stubborn and attached to their material things and the material world in general. This stubbornness, or rather persistence, has to do with the Taurus risings connection to the survival instinct (Taurus rules the 2nd house), which means that they need an energetic structure that is committed to longevity and maintenance.
They also tend to have a special love and appreciation for luxuries; things like good food, beautiful things, fine wine, soft blankets, premium coffee, physical pleasures and what we would coin the “good life”. Taurus people do not tend to be those who make sudden changes, as that flows contrary to one of the well known Taurus traits of stability.
TAURUS RISING PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND PHYSICAL APPEARANCE
Because the Taurus energy, as one of the earth signs, is about stability and resilience, Taurus rising individuals tend to have a “sturdy” build or body shape, with a thick neck, lean muscles and a muscular frame, not unlike the Bull, which is the animal that correlates to the Taurus sign.
The build of a Taurus man or Taurus woman is sometimes compared to the “square”, (with broad shoulders) which we know is the most stable shape and is in resonance with the number 4, which also represents stability. They tend to be of average height and have thick hair and/ or dark hair.
Because this second astrological sign is ruled by Venus, Taurus rising individuals tend to have good looks and attractive features. Because Taurus rules the neck, there is also typically an emphasis on the neck and/or throat and voice.
TAURUS ZODIAC SIGN SYMBOL AND BODY RULERSHIP
The sign of Taurus rules the shoulders, neck and the associated inner parts (thyroid, vocal cords, tonsils, throat). Their strong shoulders speak to their steadfastness and endurance. The bull is the symbol for the Taurus sign, which is known for being strong and determined.
TAURUS RISING CELEBRITIES
Kelly Clarkson, John Cena, Dwayne Johnson, and David Beckham are just some of the celebrities whose faces and personalities you can look up to get a better idea of the Taurus Ascendant energy.
(For Taurus sun individuals, look up Jack Nicholson, Audrey Hepburn and George Clooney!)
Learning about the ascendant sign is an excellent way to understand your own reflex responses, and why you approach life in the manner that you do.
As humans, our instinctual responses tend towards the negative, so gaining a deep understanding of both the higher and lower expressions of our ascendant energy is an excellent tool in growing in consciousness.
