If you’re finding yourself on this page, you’re probably wondering what your Pluto sign means in your birth chart, and what the big deal is with Pluto. I can tell you, as someone who does astrology for a living, and who’s been studying for years…Pluto is a huge deal and its placement is quite literally what everything else in your birth chart is refers to and is centered around.
In astrology Pluto means and represents your soul’s desires for the lifetime you are in. Pluto in your chart will tell you what you will face in your life repeatedly (in different forms) that will be a catalyst for your inner transformation . Pluto also tells you how you will go after your soul’s desire, through the planetary action of the planet Mars.
As you get into your chart, you’ll also want to make sure to study a few other important parts to fully understand what Pluto has to say about your life’s path. Here’s why:
Pluto represents your soul.
In the birth chart, Pluto represents the soul, and more specifically the soul’s desires. Yes, there are many other planets and symbols within a chart, however they all “work for” Pluto, putting in motion the necessary forces that would allow that Soul’s desires to be experienced.
Each person born into this life comes into the world with past life history (represented by the south node of the chart and the south node ruler), and a current evolutionary soul intention (or desire).
Through consciously moving towards the point exactly opposite from Pluto (called the Pluto polarity point), you can understand how your soul is desiring to actualize its desire.
In short, Pluto in your chart tells you about WHY your soul has come to earth: what area it desires to grow and evolve in. (This assessment is done both by house, sign and aspects).
In order to see how the soul wants to accomplish that evolutionary growth, you need to identify the polarity point for Pluto (again, by house, sign and aspects). The other planets in the chart also act as “worker bees” for Pluto, bringing about energies that will support evolutionary growth relative to Pluto.
Pluto’s energies will also be expressed by Mars in your chart.
This means that in order to get a full grasp of Pluto’s intention in your chart, you also need to understand your Mars placement (Mars is one part of the whole Mars/ Aries/ 1st house archetype). This is because Mars is associated with Pluto in that it is a lower octave of the Plutonian energy,
Mars energy is about instinctual action: how the soul is instinctively behaving and initiating newness in this lifetime.
The Mars energy works at a level that is unconscious (just like Pluto), in moving forward and building new paths that will support the building of the identity and individuality during this lifetime.
The Mars energy, specifically, is about the individual. (You can learn about the difference between the personal, transpersonal and outer planets here)
In the natural zodiac, the sign ruling Mars makes an inconjunct to Scorpio, the house ruling Pluto. This in conjunct in the natural zodiac shows us how there is a blindspot, or deficit of communication between the 2 energies, even though there is also a strong and important connection between the 2.

Mars wants to take steps to tangibly materialize the desires of Pluto, so that the individual can establish themselves as separate, distinct entities in the world.
Pluto, on the other hand, wants to enmesh with whatever will materialize the soul’s desire. Following this enmeshment or amalgamation, the object is then lost (through whatever external means), leading to a feeling of disempowerment. Disempowerment is followed by empowerment when the individual realizes that actually they have only lost the material representation of that object. Actually, the love, skills, recognition, power etc. etc. that they were after are intangible, and cannot ever be taken away from them. (Even if the relationship ends, the house burns down, they lose their job etc.)
The object of this enmeshment with Pluto is the same object that Mars wants to materialize.
Here, you can see that the 2 energies are working to the same end, however from different angles.
above, in the chart I’ve created, you can see the inconjunct that occurs in the natural zodiac between Mars and Scorpio.
Pluto tells you what you will face in life over and over again.
This is a hard truth to come to terms with, and something that can always be seen when questioned about the events of one’s life related to their Pluto placement.
The way that the Pluto energy works is that we become attached to something (a relationship, a belonging, a situation etc.) This thing that we become attached to is called a separating desire. This desire is something that appears to be external to ourselves, and must be accomplished or attained, and then amalgamated into who we are. After becoming comfortable with the integration of that attainment, we become secure within it. That security leads to a feeling of identification with it…and that identification eventually leads to a movement of Pluto.
The job of Pluto is to remove that external thing that creates security/ self identification.
When that thing is removed or faces destruction, we are left in a place of feeling powerless, barren, bereft and insecure. Eventually, we build back up whatever it is we lost, in a new form, and the circle of life continues in that eventually that thing gets taken away.
Through this, our consciousness is brought to the understanding that we ourselves, and everything else in creation is an aspect of the Creator. As such, we can not be, nor were we ever separate from what it was we desired.
We are taught, or rather reminded, that we cannot find security outside of ourselves. True security cannot be given to us, it must be established within ourselves through conscious awareness of our own identification with the Creator.
This is the rebirth that Pluto alludes to.
Pluto is inherently about transformation.
In this consciousness growth, we are no longer tossed about by the tempests of life, as we understand that our separateness from everything else is only apparent.
This movement shifts the power that we put outside of ourselves to realizing that it lies within us.
Conclusion
In the birth chart, Pluto is the biggest player, telling us why someone’s soul has desired to come to earth. Essentially: What are you here to work on? Knowing the placement and understanding the archetypes of everything else in your chart is a powerful tool to uncovering the HOW of Pluto. HOW is the Pluto energy wanting to accomplish it’s task in your lifetime?
I think we’ve all been through some hard and/ or unexpected bumps in our lifetimes, and the powerful thing about astrology is that it provides for you a frame of reference.
When you are going through something really challenging, knowing why you are going through it, and how you can use that situation for the very best outcome is your best bet.
It’s kind of like the idea of someone giving birth. Imagine that a woman in labour didn’t know that she was in excruciating pain because her body was trying to bring a baby into the world.
Knowing that that pain is a necessary process for her baby to come earth side makes it a lot easier to accept, even if it doesn’t lessen the pain any.
In true That Zoi Life fashion, I’m wishing you great joy and profound wisdom as you go through your own life and natal chart.
Of course the planets that are aspecting your Pluto placement will have a strong influence on how the Pluto energy shows up in your life.
